One of the biggest problems the growing green movement faces can be found hidden in every baby’s diaper. Eco friendly diapers are in short supply unlike that which they were intended to collect. There currently are not enough landfills to deal with all the diapers out there.

Babies go through about 5,000 diapers during potty training and the EPA says that diapers account for 3.4 million tons of waste (roughly 2% for the US total) in landfills (1998 figures). To qualify as eco friendly diapers it will be necessary to bypass the landfills as well as the harmful chemicals.

It may at first seem an easy, green choice to go with cloth diapers rather than disposable, but the diaper solution is not so cut and dried. To make cloth your diaper of choice you will need a few basic items.

First and foremost you will need a washer and dryer at your beck and call and the time to constantly wash the tainted offerings that your baby produces at a near prolific rate. You will need to choose an eco friendly laundry soap and the style of cloth diaper that best suits your child.

This is by far the most preferable way to deal with the diaper issue, but not the solution for everyone. City dwellers may look to a diaper service, but eco friendly diapers do not come from most pay services. Due to excessive hot water use and necessity of chlorine bleach (to kill Staff and other infections common to babies), these services produce less than earth friendly results.

This takes us back to disposable diapers. Conventional disposables (Pampers, Huggies) are also not eco friendly diapers. Their manufacture involves chlorine (a volatile organic compound VOC) and all use chemical gel cores that “lock in” a baby’s pee. These chemical gels contain sodium polyacrylate known for respiratory and skin irritation problems (mind you in much higher doses than found in diapers).

These manufacturers would argue that the chemicals used are all within safe limits, but do you really want to swaddle your child in such potential problems? Disposable, eco friendly diapers do exist, sort of, and are making strides towards even higher standards of green on a daily basis.

A well know manufacturer of many green products, Seventh Generation, makes a disposable, biodegradable diaper or so they say. The truth is a truly biodegradable diaper doesn’t really exist due to the quantity of diapers versus the available landfills.

But Seventh Generation is a very transparent company as far as their ingredients go and produces some of the most earth friendly products available. They also claim that their diapers use a “chemically inert” gel and claim independent scientific research has shown it is “nontoxic, not carcinogenic, and nonirritating to the skin.”

Another company, Gdiapers, makes a similar product with the added advantage of making their diapers flushable. The flushable feature does eliminate the landfill problem (some statistics put a diapers landfill life around 500 years), but both of these so called eco friendly diapers use similar gel cores on which there is still not enough definitive research.

The winner, at least for the moment, in the disposable eco friendly diaper contest is made by Tushies. Assembled in the US, these are made of a cotton blend, chlorine free wood pulp and best of all, NO chemical gels. Not as widely available as the Seventh Generation product, this brand can be found in some health food stores and also online.

The final word on diapers is that “eco friendly diapers” is an still an oxymoron at this point. Diaper services show facts that gel absorbents in disposables are harmful and disposables claim the chlorine used in diaper services is harmful. There is no definitive proof of either side being right. The eco friendly diapers of the future will combine all the best features, flushable, no gel absorbents above all comfort and safety for your baby.

Going green, sustainability and reducing your carbon foot-print are huge trends these days. With an increased awareness about the state of the environment, more and more people are looking for alternatives to gifts that are harmful to the environment. With increased awareness comes an increased demand for eco-friendly gifts. Fortunately, many retailers recognize the demand for eco-friendly gifts and are increasing their supply.

What it means to be eco-friendly

There are many definitions about what it means to be eco-friendly. For some people it means buying products that are made from recycled materials and that are recyclable. For others it means buying local, independently made gifts bought at fair-market price from people who are paid a livable wage. Others still define them as handmade gifts that leave very little impact on the planet and do not buy into the economic system.

No matter what definition you choose to subscribe to, there are many options available for eco-friendly gifts:

1.	Grocery tote. Plastic is wasteful and doesn’t biodegrade. Bringing your own canvas bag to the store when you do your grocery shopping is one way to cut down on the amount of waste dumped into landfills each year. Many grocery stores even give you a discount for bringing your own bags in.

Grocery totes make an excellent gift. They come in different sizes with different designs on them. If you want to make a more personalized gift, get a plain tote and decorate it yourself. Use fabric from old clothes and sew designs onto the tote. Permanent, felt-tipped markers can be used to draw designs and patters. Adding your own touches will give the gift more meaning to the recipient.

2.	Recycled journals. These work best if you make them yourself. Unless you have access to a lot of scrap paper, it might take a while to gather the materials for this project, so give yourself plenty of time before you need to have the gift ready.

To make a recycled journal gather as many sheets of used computer paper as you can find. Since you want people to be able to use the journal, make sure only one side is printed on. Usually a stack about an inch thick works fine. Fold each page in half horizontally, crease and tear the page in half. Stack the pages together, making sure the blank side is up. Now, get some colored construction paper or something you can use as a cover, decorate it and bind the pages together. Personalize the journal however you want.

3.	Gardening kit. Slow food and organic food are two eco-friendly movements that are growing in popularity. What better way to share the experience of eating than to give a gardening kit. These can either be bought premade or you can assemble them yourself. If you want to assemble one yourself, it’s important to think about the needs of the recipient. Herbs and spices are excellent to include if the person lives in an apartment with limited space. A window planter can serve as a both a basket for the gift and to plant the seeds in. Many Starbucks locations offer free used coffee grinds which can be included for compost. Other things to consider putting in your package are gloves, a small shovel, watering can and clippers.

4.	Potpourri. Potpourri makes an excellent gift and can be handmade using seasonal plants and flowers. This is another one that takes some time to make, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead for this one. Rose pedals, cedar wood, pine needles, rosemary, lemon and lavender all make excellent scents. Experiment with different combinations of your favorite scents.

5.	Hemp products. Hemp is often organic and isn’t bleached, making it a much healthier and eco-friendly alternative to cotton. Clothing made from hemp is just as comfortable as cotton, and much more sustainable. You can find everything from T-shirts and pants to bags and journals made from hemp. Giving hemp gifts shows your commitment to personal health as well as the health of the environment.

6.	Jewelry. Women love jewelry. But with so much of our gold, silver and diamonds coming from non-sustainable sources, it can be hard to find jewelry that is eco-friendly and fair-trade. But fear not, with a little bit research on the internet, you’ll be able to find plenty of retailers selling fair-traded and eco-friendly products. Better still try making your own jewelry out of natural materials. Hemp makes excellent threading for necklaces, bracelets and anklets. If you enjoy nature, go for a hike and look for something you can make a necklace with. Stones are abundant and make an excellent piece. Also try feathers, arrowheads or bones. All of these make for unique pieces of jewelry that will turn heads without leaving a footprint on the Earth.

No matter what their tastes are, eco-friendly gifts are good for everyone. Not only will you help the planet by reducing your carbon footprint, but you’ll also be guaranteed to give a unique and interesting gift. The beauty of going green is that it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, so you’ll be able to give sustainable gifts to everyone on your list.
web development

As more and more companies shift and offer fabrics made of environmentally sustainable sources, people have also begun re-thinking of their options in buying fabrics. In the past, comfort or style were the primary consideration in buying fabric. At present, the fabric’s impact on Mother Earth must be factored in.

A fabric is generally considered eco-friendly (or green) if it possesses the following characteristics:

- Minimum chemical and/or pesticide use on the raw material
- Sustainable planting and farming practices
- A certification of the growers’ and manufacturers’ eco-friendly operations
- Animal-friendly business practices
- The production of the fabric abides by existing trade practices

Green fabrics are not only healthy to the environment but also to consumers. Consider this list of the options when seeking green fabrics:

1. Bamboo Fiber – Fabric made from bamboo, which is incredibly soft and smooth, luxuriously comfortable, and 100% biodegradable.

2. Hemp – Hemp fibers are longer, more durable and more absorbent than cotton fibers. This plant has been grown for fiber and food production for centuries.

3. Organic cotton – Organic cotton is produced from cotton that is grown without pesticides. Organic cotton is more costly to produce than conventionally produced cotton.

4. Jute – Jute is known as burlap in North America. It is one of the most competitively-priced natural fibers in the market today. It runs next to cotton in production quantity.

5. Ingeo – Ingeo is a trademark of a man-made fiber made from corn.

6. Hessian Cloth – Hessian or Burlap is an unrefined fabric woven from jute or hemp.

7. Recycled Polyester – Recycled Polyester is a fabric made from used polyester items such as clothes.

8. Tencel? – Tencel? is a brand patented to Lenzing Fibers’ lyocell. Tencel is made from wood pulp cellulose and is soft as silk, strong as polyester, cool as linen, warm as wool and as absorbent as cotton.

9. Ramie – Ramie is one of the oldest textile fabrics dating back to being used as cloth in wrapping Egyptian mummies. It is also known for its durability 8 times stronger than cotton and 7 times than silk. Ramie is resistant to bacteria, alkali, mildew and insect attack.

10. Organic Wool – Organic wool is produced without artificial hormones and pesticides. Most organic wool products available in the market nowadays are baby apparel and accessories. The production of organic wool is more expensive than other organic sources because of higher operational and certification costs.

11. Organic Linen – Organic linen comes from flax plants grown without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers.

12. FORTREL EcoSpun – Made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and containers. Fortrel Ecospun is known for its durability, color fastness and shrinkage-free qualities. This fabric is developed in the US by Wellmann Inc.

13. Milk Silk – originally produced by Cyran, a Chinese company, this silk is made from milk. However, because of the high cost of milk, this fabric option never gained popularity in the textile industry.

14. Soy Silk – SoySilk is a trademark owned by South West Trading Company, which produces this silk known to drape like linen and has a smooth sheen like any other silk.

15. Nettle fiber – made from the stinging nettle weed. It possesses natural moth repellant characteristic and dates back as early as World War I as a cotton yarn substitute.

16. Spider-web fabric – Researchers have tried to extract fabric from spider webs. However, until today research on this kind of fabric has not produced significant results.

Whatever type of fabric you select for your clothing and household textiles, always check to see its source, and in addition to considering the impact it has on the environment during production, also consider the resources required to transport it from its country of origin.

Copyright (c) 2008 Virginia Ginsburg
wedding speeches

In this article I’m going to give a review of Provillus. When I was searching for hair treatment products, I was a bit overwhelmed. There were so many products that I didn’t know which to go with and what was the best. I did research and I soon learned that Provillus was usually ranked first among review sites and there was a general buzz going around over this product. I’m a natural skeptic so I wasn’t sold on it, especially since it was heavily advertised over the internet. I did more research on it and wrote a review of provillus, I hope you enjoy.

Natural DHT Blocker

If you’re reading this, you probably understand the significance of DHT. DHT, made by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, bind to your hair follicles, retarding their growth, and stopping their blood supply. This will stop growth of any new hair from coming in. So it’s vital that you block DHT from binding on to these follicles, and stopping any new DHT from forming. There are many products that do this, but the thing that separates them is how they actually accomplish this goal. Propecia, a solution that many use, is a manufactured drug that does this. Its blocks DHT pretty well but there are big downsides. For one you have to get a prescription from your doctor. But the second and more important downside is the side effects that are associated with using it. The main is sexual side effects which include a decrease in sex drive, inability to get a full erection, and a decrease in seamen. Many other symptoms include anxiety, depression, and brain fog. Man question how sustainable living with Propecia is since you have to wait until the 6th month to start seeing results.

Provillus has received such great reviews is because it will give you the same sort of results as manufactured drugs like Propecia, except without the harsh side effects. Since its an herbal formula, it uses natural ingredients to block the use and production of DHT.

Results Tell The Story

Although I understood that Provillus being a natural DHT blocker separated it from most of its competitors, I still wasn’t sold. I wanted to know if actually came through on what it advertised. From what I read from user forums, review sites, and general user feedback, it seems that the majority of its users actually saw results. From the users that I emailed, it seems that their hair loss stopped, started to become a bit thicker, and a good amount of people had hair growth where they’ve had it lost. I also noticed that for those it didn’t work for, they weren’t very diligent on using the formula everyday. So if you are focused and persistent with taking Provillus, it will give you all the tools to stop hair loss and re-grow your hair. I hope you’ve enjoyed this review of Provillus and take the necessary steps to help you see results.

What you have been hearing lately is true. Green is the new black. The fashion world might not care entirely about some issues like the protests against animal-fur, but the new go-green statement will be going on for years to come. It is no joke the issues our Earth is going through due to global warming, for this, fashion companies are doing their deed, like jewelry made from recyclable materials and the usage of distinct materials, like soy and eco-friendly fabrics like organic and sustainable cotton. Fashion is a great communication strategy to educate consumers about the problem faced with Global Warming, fashion influences people and this makes it an important aspect for change.

Global Warming is also dictating the trends, other than fashion itself, since temperature is so unpredictable. Fall in some places, can be hotter than summer, this is allowing us to wear boots and wool in any season.

Young designers are taking this seriously and developing outfits depending on sudden temperature changes, also, ecological materials are very present on the style and green conscious consumers and designers. Alternate materials like organic cotton, bamboo and hemp have increased notably in sales for the past 3 years. There is now a greater variety of natural textiles available for purchase like soy or bamboo silk, offering the sustainability needed for the earth needs. Hemp is actually the strongest known natural fiber, four times stronger than cotton and also helps block out UV rays.

Oscar de la Renta, Dian Von Furstenberg and Versace, are some of the fashion companies experimenting with hemp and bamboo. Organic cotton has been used by almost everyone including retailers like H&M and Zara. The colors used are also influenced by the environment this season.

Synthetic fabrics can also be ecological when they are made with reusable products and textiles like recycled wool and are offering consumers education about their manufacturing process so they know what they are buying.

If you want to contribute with as little as you can, you can start by washing your clothes less than you do, buy vintage clothes, this is another form of recycling. Also, participate with your clothing, get to know where it comes from who made it, how and experiment with it by adding special accessories like buttons and pins and illustrations if you dare to make it your own, this way, you are being your own co-designer. Do some research about which companies are trying to make a difference, these are the ones that should be supported, write to the ones that are not contributing, they would want to hear from you.

As you know, green means fresh, and everyone wants to beat out the hot weather, but there is still to do, especially with eco fabrics. In the future, there will be bigger improvements like using less water and chemicals, emitting less Carbon Dioxide and resulting in less air and water pollution. Everyone should join forces starting today; the hardest step would be the education of consumers around the globe.
wahm

Say you’re camping and you need a way to get clean water. There’s a stream nearby, but you know there might be bacteria or certain protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium living in the water. No worries. Just whip out the SteriPEN and this device will do for you in 90 seconds what chemicals can’t in 4 hours.

This product seems to hold a lot of promise. Soldiers in the battle field who have to resort to drinking either tap water or desert ground water can’t carry a whole water filtration system on their backs. However, this lightweight SteriPEN can be packed away easily and comes in handy in such situations.

The SteriPEN Classic model uses 2 AA batteries and with Lithium Disposables, it can purify 16 ounces of water 200 times.

Just how effective is it? It’s been tested at A&L Laboratories, as well as at the University of Maine, University of Arizona, Oregon Health Sciences University, and the Ryerson University – Toronto Canada, and has been proven to kill 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.9% of protozoa That is way above the requirements of the US EPA’s Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers.

How reliable is it? Let’s just say it’s been used on top of Mt. Everest and Kilimanjaro.

Will SteriPEN cause skin or eye damage from UV light? Not if you use it correctly. The blue light is simply an indicator that the device is working properly. Here’s what SteriPEN.com has to say:

“UV-C will not pass through most materials. Drinking containers made from glass, ceramic, metal, and nearly all plastics block UV-C transmission. Also, the underside of the air/water interface in a water container acts as a very effective reflector for UV-C. As a result, when SteriPEN’s lamp is immersed in virtually any drinking vessel, the UV-C is well contained. Note that SteriPEN’s water sensors prevent it from operating unless the lamp is completely immersed.”

via: SteriPEN.com

It’s the time of year for living rooms across the land to be covered in brightly-colored red and green wrapping paper. Are you aware that wrapping paper and packing are to blame for the nation’s twenty-five p.c spike in generated waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s? So, what is the green-minded gift giver to do? Well, keep on reading for some green gift-wrapping ideas on the best way to give a thoughtfully wrapped present without taking more than your measure of the Earth’s many gifts.

Reusable carrier bags rather than wrapping your gifts in dispensable present bags or wasteful wrapping paper, give a little additional and wrap it up in a reusable carrier bag. Shopping totes are awfully trendy and come in all kinds of styles from hyper green to mega glam. You can pick up reusable carrier bags at your local corner shop, online at sites like ecobags.com or you can make your own at home. Utilize old Maps Now that we are all using GPS and cell telephone navigation systems, those old maps are going to waste. Reclaim old maps to give your gift a vintage cool, wrapped look. Make the Wrapping Part of the Present rather than wrapping your present in paper that is only going to be wasted, make the wrapping or packing part of the present itself. As an example, a watering can makes a great container for a gardening present while a teapot may be the ideal container for a collection of herbal teas. For soft wrapping ideas, try wrapping your presents in fabric items like scarves, an organic baby blanket or a pretty hand towel. Avoid the Tape Not all recycling centers accept wrapping paper and those that do regularly require that it be tape-free. So, skip over the tape and wrap your presents with compostable twine or a bit of crave.

Go Natural for Yard Unearths rather than embellishing your gifts with plastic bows and garish ribbons, look in your own yard for decorations that are both stunning and natural. Sprigs of holly, pinecones, berries and shells are all gorgeous and make shocking accents for any present. Try Banana Paper Banana fiber paper is made of the wasted stalks of the banana tree in the banana cropping process. Try PaperMojo.com for some awfully lovable and ultra-sustainable designs. Reuse Old Papers and Mags Why buy wrapping materials when you most likely have stacks of it already in your house. You may not need to wrap a present in paper, but you can get artsy with old wallpaper, mags, children’s comics or perhaps old greetings cards. Remember, green is always gorgeous.

archeology

Fashionistas across the globe are now joining the movement to ‘Go Green.’ With so many fabulous designers following suit, eco-friendly is no longer considered frumpy. From yoga gear to work wear recyclable clothing is all the rage.

Perhaps you are thinking about the definition of “eco-friendly” as it relates to garments. In this context one is talking about garments crafted from natural and fair-trade textiles such as soy, organic cotton and bamboo. An advantage of the organic cotton is that one doesn’t utilize bug killers in growing it. Regular cotton requires more bug killers than any other item we grow. One third of a pound of chemical substances go into the manufacturing of a simple polo shirt. The term fair-trade is applied to the situation in which workers are paid reasonable salaries for working on the garments that please us so.

Sustainable clothing is very comfortable and materials like organic cotton feel so much better against the skin than prickly polyester does. Cutting edge designers like Portland’s Ryan Christensen are using eco-friendly fabrics for clothing that doesn’t exploit the planet. Christensen is the founder of Sameunderneath, a company that produces eclectic pieces like trendy, sleek garments that are made from bamboo.

The environmentally conscious shopper has more and more choices. There are even luxury lines available. Nau is a new designer that has an extended line of clothing. The company is run by executives that previously worked for several name brand companies, such as Nike or Adidas. The line uses fabrics made from natural fabrics like cotton and recycled materials, including soda bottles. There are also items made from a new synthetic material that is derived from corn.

At the moment, many designers cannot keep up with their less sustainable counterparts due to lack of materials, but that is not set in stone. This industry is always changing and shifting, so there’s always something new being developed. With new ideas floating around and innovations to be discovered, the industry is always exciting.

Consumers of products are becoming more choosy about where are the products they buy are coming from, which reflects on the designers. Soon becoming eco-conscious and style-conscious will go hand and hand.
bath wedding favors
